Why Embassy Attestation is NOT Required

China has signed up to the Hague Apostille Convention which entered into force on 7th November 2023. This removes the requirement for the embassy attestation stamps on UK documents. The embassy will NOT accept any document for further legalisation as it is not required.

Embassy Attestation FAQ’s

Can multiple documents be attested at the same time?2025-09-24T17:02:26+00:00

Yes. If you have several documents for the same country (for example, a degree certificate, transcript, and police clearance), they can usually be submitted together for apostille and embassy attestation. This can save time and reduce courier costs. However, each document is charged separately by the embassy. Each document is normally attested individually as most embassies do not accept documents that are prepared into sets.

For example, if you have a degree and transcript for use in the UAE, each document must have an apostille and the embassy will attest each document individually.

If you have several documents we can provide a reduced fee.

Which countries require attestation?2025-09-24T16:53:03+00:00

Any country that is not part of the Hague Apostille Convention will normally require embassy attestation.

This includes (but is not limited to) the UAE, Qatar, China, Kuwait, Vietnam, and Egypt. please visit our embassy attestation page for links to the countries we provide most services for.

Do I need to attest original documents?2025-09-24T16:50:22+00:00

This really depends on the document and the embassy rules. In most cases original documents are required. Some embassies will also accept certified copies. We will advise you on what is needed for your specific documents.

As a basic guide –

Original documents MUST be attested

  • Birth Certificates
  • Adoption Certificates
  • Marriage Certificate – Civil Ceremony Certificates
  • Medical Note – Doctor’s Note
  • Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage
  • Death certificate/Coroners certificate
  • HM Revenue and Customs letters signed by an HMRC officer
  • ACPO or ACRO Certificates
  • NPCC Certificates and Police Letters

Copy documents MAY be accepted

  • Degrees, Masters, PGCE
  • Diplomas & Transcripts
  • Final Order – Divorce document from court
  • Passports – we can only legalise a photo copy, not the original
  • Company Certificates of Incorporation
  • Memorandum and Articles of Association
  • Annual Returns

This is a small sample of documents provided as a guide. We are happy to provide advice if you contact us.

How much does embassy attestation cost?2025-09-24T15:12:54+00:00

The cost depends on the embassy, as each charges its own legalisation fee per document. The fee for different documents can also vary by embassy. There is also the cost of the apostille and any solicitor certification if required. We provide clear prices including all fees.

What is embassy attestation?2025-10-16T10:35:01+00:00

Embassy attestation is the process of having your UK document legalised/attested by the embassy or consulate of the country where it will be used. It confirms that the document has been properly authenticated in the UK and is recognised as valid abroad. Visit our embassy attestation page for information on the most common countries we provide services for.

How is embassy attestation different from an apostille?2025-09-24T14:51:25+00:00

An apostille is issued by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and is accepted in countries that are members of the Hague Apostille Convention. Embassy attestation is required when the destination country is not a member of the convention (e.g. UAE, Qatar, China, Egypt). In these cases, your document must be apostilled first and then attested by the embassy.

Which UK documents can be attested by an embassy?2025-09-24T14:55:04+00:00

Virtually all UK documents can be attested with embassies that offer attestation services.

Common examples include:

  • Birth, marriage, and death certificates

  • Academic certificates and transcripts

  • Police clearance certificates (e.g. ACRO)

  • Medical certificates

  • Company documents (e.g. certificates of incorporation, powers of attorney)

This is a very small sample of documents. You can find more details on the documents we legalise on the documents page.

What is the process for embassy attestation?2025-09-24T14:59:46+00:00

Attestation can vary by embassy. There are different submission requirements and many different document rules for each embassy. Do not worry, we are here to help. You can contact us for guidance if you are not sure how to attest your document.

The simple version on the attestation process is –

  1. Document preparation – some documents need solicitor certification before they can be apostilled.

  2. Apostille – the FCDO attaches an apostille to confirm the document’s authenticity.

  3. Embassy legalisation – the relevant embassy/consulate stamps, certifies or seals the document to confirm it is valid for use in their country.

Using our embassy attestation service make the process trouble free. We provide guidance on how to attest the document and take care of everything for you.
