Apostilles for NPCC - ACRO - ACPO Certificates
There are several different types of criminal record checks (often called background checks) that can be legalised by apostille. The most common are DBS and Disclosure Scotland. However, you may have an NPCC, ACPO or ACRO police certificate that needs the apostille attaching for use outside of the UK.

What do NPCC, ACPO and ACRO stand for?
They are abbreviations of the following-
NPCC = National Police Chiefs’ Council
ACPO = Association of Chief Police Officers
ACRO = ACPO Criminal Records Office
How to order a Police Certificate?
Anyone in the UK can order this document either online or by postal application. You will need proof of identity and proof of address.
Individuals living in England, Wales, Northern Ireland, Jersey and the Isle of Man can obtain a documents from acro.police.uk.
Scottish residents need to contact mygov.scot for a Scotland Police document. If you are applying for a job, then you may need to contact Disclosure Scotland.
There are two service options available at the time of writing-
- Slow service - £45.00 (10 working days)
- Quick service - £80.00 (2 working days)
The Police Certificate should be ordered if you are seeking employment or submitting visa applications. It is also possible to purchase a subject access report. At the time of writing the fee to obtain a subject access report is £10. The service is not quick and reports are normally issued in around 40 days.
Please note: Subject access reports are for personal use. You should not be ‘forced’ to provide an NPCC issued subject access report, as it may contain information that you do want be to divulged. If your background check is for employment, you should order the Police Certificate or a background check from Disclosure Scotland (they issue background checks for all of the UK, not just Scotland).
